Aloe (Aloe vera) — contains more than 160 active substances with soothing, antioxidant and other properties. The active substances it contains may contribute to maintaining the normal activity of the immune system and help maintain the body's vitality; aloe also has a laxative action.
Oligosaccharides — are insoluble organic compounds classed as carbohydrates (saccharides), otherwise known as prebiotics. They are not digested in the stomach and are not broken down by some gut bacteria (for example Escherichia coli). Oligosaccharides play an important role in the human gut: they create favourable conditions for the gut microflora to develop, feeding beneficial probiotic bacteria and supporting their growth. Oligosaccharides help maintain the natural balance of the gut microflora. In nature, oligosaccharides are found in artichokes, chicory, leeks, onions, asparagus and burdock leaves, and in breast milk.
The prebiotic concept is relatively recent, but its significance for health is widely studied. Prebiotics are oligosaccharides that create the conditions for probiotic gut bacteria to thrive. Getting enough of them means probiotic bacteria have food and can multiply. In other words, oligosaccharides can help balance the gut microflora and so support gut well-being.
An adequate intake of oligosaccharides helps maintain normal metabolism, the body's natural clearing processes and mineral balance.
The probiotic term is familiar to most people — it appears on food labels and is discussed widely. The benefits of probiotics have been recognised for centuries, and many products are supplemented with probiotic bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. These bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids and vitamins B12 and K, and support the absorption of minerals such as calcium and magnesium in the small intestine. A healthy population of these bacteria in the gut acts protectively, making it harder for unwanted bacteria to multiply and attach to the intestinal wall. Bifidobacteria also support IgA synthesis in the gut and the production of antibodies. Prebiotic and probiotic cultures help maintain a favourable composition of the gut microflora.
It has been estimated that the average European gets about 3–10 mg of oligosaccharides a day from food, which may not be enough for beneficial gut bacteria to thrive.
In nature, prebiotics are found in breast milk, artichokes, chicory, leeks, onions, asparagus and burdock leaves.
Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), known in the East as the plant of calm, wisdom and long life — a mushroom that grows on the roots and trunks of certain trees. It is rich in essential and non-essential amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins (particularly C and D), minerals (calcium, phosphorus and iron), active polysaccharides that support the cellular immune response, and terpenoids that support resilience to stress and help limit the build-up of free radicals.
In traditional Chinese practice, lingzhi has long been used to support the body's strength and vitality. It helps support the body's capacity to adapt under stress (an adaptogenic action).
The cordyceps mushroom (Cordyceps sinensis) is an ascomycete fungus that grows on the Tibetan plateau at around 4 km altitude. A spore that reaches the larva of a ghost moth (Hepialidae) germinates in spring, drawing on the larva's nutrients, and later attaches to plant roots and feeds from them. In the East, cordyceps has for centuries been considered the most valuable of plants — a "gift of the gods" and a "miraculous talisman".
Cordyceps contains antioxidants (beta-carotene, vitamins E and C), selenium, zinc, ubiquinone, polysaccharides and other valuable substances — more than 70 micro- and macro-elements in all, along with enzymes, amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. Its principal immune-supporting and antioxidant properties come from its polysaccharide complex.
In traditional Chinese practice, cordyceps has long been used to support the body's strength and vitality.
- valued as a way to support general well-being;
- helps maintain the body's natural defences;
- helps maintain the normal microflora of the respiratory tract;
- helps maintain the normal activity of the cardiovascular system;
- helps maintain normal metabolism;
- binds heavy-metal salts and other residues in the digestive tract;
- contributes to supporting the body's self-regulating mechanisms.
The production process — low-temperature cell wall disruption — preserves the active substances of the plant material as far as possible and ensures good bioavailability.
Chitosan — a natural polysaccharide that swells and is not absorbed from the digestive tract. Chitosan also forms stable compounds with heavy-metal salts.
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) — long used to support normal circulation. The substances it contains have antioxidant activity, help maintain normal circulation throughout the body and contribute to maintaining the normal activity of the nervous system. Ginkgo extract also helps maintain memory, attention and alertness, and normal circulation in the limbs.
70% of the ginkgo raw material used worldwide is exported from China.
Black jelly fungus (Exidia glandulosa) — a sweet-tasting mushroom with a black, jelly-like texture, widely used in vegetarian cooking as a source of protein, plant fibre and minerals, with almost no fat.
Abrus (Abrus cantoniensis) — long used in traditional Chinese practice to support liver function, energy and tone.
Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolii) — used in traditional Chinese practice to support liver function and the body's natural clearing processes; the flower tea is valued for its refreshing effect. In China, chrysanthemum petals or tea compresses are placed on the eyes for tiredness, dryness or irritation, and are suggested for people who work at screens.
